Box Score West Point, Ga.--Baseball won its first game at the NCCAA South Region Tournament Thursday afternoon, topping Clearwater Christian College by a 5-2 final score.
The Hawks scored the first runs of the game in the sixth inning as
Ian Redetzky drove in
Zach Santos on an RBI single, and then
Jesse Gavigan brought in the
Bryan Mathews on a fielder's choice.
Clearwater cut the lead to one in the seventh on a Tim Reidy solo homerun. But, Shorter answered in the bottom of the inning; plating three runs. First, on an RBI double from
Dylan Riner; who came in to score later in the inning on a balk.
Dustin Evans came home one batter later on a sacrifice fly from Mathews, making it a 5-1 game.
Austin Yeomen scored in the top of the eighth for the 5-2 final score.
Russell Crosby earned his first win of the season with a seven inning performance, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Zach Whitaker picked up his second save of the season, pitching one inning, with a strikeout and a walk. Will Kirby recorded the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout over 6.2 innings of work.
Charlie Gillis and Evans both recorded two hits on the day for the Hawks.
Shorter will be back in action Friday afternoon at 2:00pm against Toccoa Falls College.
