Baseball falls in semi-finals to Lee, 11-8

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mason, Ohio -- In a season that saw more losses than wins the Hawks proved that records don't always tell the whole story, as they finished the 2014 season an 11-8 loss in the semi-finals of the NCCAA World Series to fell Gulf South Conference rival, Lee University.

In the final game of pool play Shorter's bats came alive as they pounded out a 10-1 win over Bluefield College to earn a spot in the semi-finals. During the game the Hawks received homeruns from Bryan Mathews, Ian Redetzky, and Zach Santos provided the biggest blow with a grand slam in the fourth inning.

In the Hawks semifinal matchup with longtime rival, Lee University, Shorter proved that it wasn't finished fighting. Taking the lead 1-0 in the first inning as Dylan Riner scored on a sacrifice fly from Santos. The Flames answered in the bottom of the inning with seven runs, but the Hawks were far from out.

In the third inning they rallied for four runs to cut the lead to two. Charlie Gillis scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Santos followed with a triple to plate Riner and Dustin Evans, and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Redetzky.

Lee added three insurance runs; one in the bottom of the third, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth. Again, the Hawks answered; this time scoring three times in eighth, but it wasn't enough as the Flames held on to win. Darrius Jennings crossed the plate first, on a wild pitch. Gillis then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Jesse Gavigan, and then Chad Ikerd came in on a bases loaded walk to Mathews.

Jeremy Bales recorded the win for Lee; allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Brodie Orr recorded the loss after only pitching 0.2 innings; allowing five runs – three earned – two hits with two walks.

Shorter finishes the season with a final record of 17-36-1.
