Baseball wins NCCAA South Region Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 West Point, Ga.--Baseball captured the NCCAA South Region Championship Saturday with a 3-2 win over Toccoa Falls College and earned a trip to the National Tournament.

The Hawks moved to 15-34 on the season after Saturday's games.

To begin the day Shorter fell to Toccoa Falls, 4-2, but since both only had one loss during the tournament they faced off again for the championship.

The Eagles scored four times in the fourth inning of game one to take the lead. The Hawks then cut the lead in half in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Toccoa Falls held on for the win. Bryan Mathews singled to lead off the inning, and came in to score on an RBI double from Ian Redetzky. With two outs, Jacob Forrest reached base on an error; which plated Redetzky.

Dylan Charles earned the win in game one, pitching the complete game; while allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Justin Machado recorded the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts over four innings of work.

In the championship game, Shorter took the lead in the first inning as Redetzky delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Dustin Evans; who singled earlier in the inning. The Eagles tied the game, 1-1, in the fifth on a homerun.

The Hawks answered in the sixth with two runs to regain the lead. First, as Zach Santos came in to score on an RBI single from Forrest. Then, on a sacrifice fly out from Tyler Trenary. Toccoa Falls scored once in the seventh, but Shorter held on for the win, 3-2.

Travis McPherson earned the win for the Hawks on a complete game performance, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Zach Murdock recorded the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work.

Santos finished the day with four hits; while Redetzky, Forrest, and Evans each recorded two hits.

Shorter will now turn its attention the national stage as they prepare for the trip to Mason, Ohio for the NCCAA National Tournament beginning May 14.
