Box Score 2 Pensacola, Fla.--No. 2 West Florida topped the Hawks, 9-2, in the opener and took the finale of Saturday's doubleheader, 3-2.
The losses drop Shorter to 9-25 on the season and 6-14 in the Gulf South Conference. The Argos improve to 27-5 overall and 19-3 in conference play.
West Florida got on the board first scoring one in the first inning and adding four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Hawks cut the lead to three when both,
Dustin Evans and
Dylan Riner, scored on an error in the third, but that was all the offense Shorter would get. The Argos added two more in the sixth, and one each in the seventh and eighth en route of the 9-2 win.
Dawson Brown recorded the win for West Florida after allowing two runs – both unearned – on two hits with two strikeouts over six innings of work.
Colton Cross got the loss for Shorter; allowing seven runs on nine hits with six strikeouts through six innings.
The Argos scored twice in the first inning to take the lead, but the Hawks answered in the second to tie the game.
Ian Redetzky singled and stole second, then moved to third on a single from
Jesse Gavigan, before coming in to score on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Chad Ikerd then singled to plate Gavigan to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when Aaron Haag doubled to bring in Brandon Tyler and give West Florida the win, 3-2.
Dayan Rodriguez earned the win for the Argos; allowing two runs on five hits with ten strikeouts over the complete game.
Russell Crosby recorded the loss; also pitching the complete game, while allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Ikerd finished the day with two hits; both coming in the second game. While Redetzky, Gavigan, Riner, Evans, and
Charlie Gillis each recorded one hit.
The series will conclude Sunday afternoon at 2pm EST.
