Box Score ROME--Despite erasing a six run deficit, the Hawks came up just short to Lee Sunday afternoon, 11-10.
The loss moves Shorter to 8-20 on the season, and 5-11 in Gulf South Conference play. The Flames improve to 21-9 overall and 9-6 in the GSC.
The Hawks scored first as
Bryan Mathews connected on a 2-run homer in the first inning. Lee cut the lead in half in the third inning, and went ahead in the fifth with four runs. Shorter answered with one of their own in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Mathews to make it a, 5-3, game.
The Flames added an insurance run in the sixth, and then plated three runs in the seventh to make the score, 9-3.
In the bottom of the inning, the Hawks bats came alive as they pounded out six hits and scored seven runs to take the lead 10-9.
Dylan Riner led off the inning with a double,
Dustin Evans followed with a walk, and
Zach Santos singled to load the bases. Once again Mathews delivered; this time a 2 RBI single.
Ian Redetzky walked, one batter later, to again load the bases.
Jacob Forrest's sacrifice fly plated Santos, to make it a 9-6 game.
Jesse Gavigan followed with a 2-run double and then Riner tied the game on an RBI single. Evans then gave Shorter the lead on an RBI single to plate
Charlie Gillis.
Lee regained the lead in the eighth as two runs scored on a 2 RBI single by Zacary Hawkins for the, 11-10, final score.
Jeremy Bales earned the win for the Flames allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout over 2.1 innings of work. Zach Whitaker recorded the loss, allowing five runs – three earned – on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
Santos finished the day 4-5 at the plate; while Riner went 3-5 with an RBI, and Mathews recorded two hits with 5 RBI. Evans and Gillis both recorded two hits, as well.
Shorter will be back in action Tuesday as they play host of Stillman College at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex; game time is set for 2pm. In the last meeting of the teams, the Hawks won 6-4.
