Hawks split with Flames

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME--The Hawks split the day with longtime rival, Lee University; winning the opener, 6-3, and falling in the finale, 4-3.

Shorter moves to 8-19 overall on the season and 5-10 in Gulf South Conference play. Lee goes to 20-9 overall and 8-6 in the GSC.

The Flames scored first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning scoring twice to make is a 2-1 game. Dylan Riner walked to lead off the inning, and came in to score on a double from Bryan Mathews. Ian Redetzky followed with a walk, and Jacob Forrest connected on a single to plate Mathews.

In the fifth, the Hawks scored four times to take a 6-1 lead. Dustin Hays reached on an error to begin the inning, and came in score on Zach Santos sacrifice fly later in the frame. Then, with the bases loaded, Redetzky walked; bringing in Riner. One batter later, Forrest capped things off with a two out, 2 RBI double to plate Mathews and Dustin Evans.

Lee scored once in both the seventh and eighth innings for the 6-3 final score.

Colton Cross earned the win for Shorter, allowing two runs – one earned – on five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings of work. Jeremy Stawychny recorded the loss for the Flames; allowing six runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Lee once again scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shorter tied the game in the fifth on a single from Riner to plate Tyler Trenary. In the sixth, the Flames put three on the board to make it a 4-1 game, on a home run from Andres Nelo. The Hawks mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning, cut the lead to one on Mathews 2-run homerun, but couldn't find the go ahead; ending both the sixth and seventh with double plays.

Dustin Lawson earned the win for Lee in game two; allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work. Justin Machado recorded the loss; pitching six innings, while allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Riner finished the day with three hits and two runs scored. Both, Mathews and Forrest finished with two hits.

The Hawks will be back in action Sunday afternoon to close out the series with Lee at 2:00pm.

Sunday's game will also serve as breast cancer awareness day. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their supports. All proceeds from the game will benefit the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation for breast cancer awareness and education. Also, the team's game wore pink jerseys will be auctioned off after the game to raise additional funds.
