Baseball falls to Columbus State, 4-2

Box Score ROME--Columbus State completed the season sweep of the Hawks Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 win at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex. The Cougars won the first meeting of the teams, 2-1, on February 22 in Columbus, Ga.

The loss drops Shorter to 7-18 on the season; while Columbus State moves to 21-8 overall.

The Cougars scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Brendan Collins delivered a single. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Jesse Gavigan scored on an RBI double from Jacob Forrest.

In the fifth, Columbus State regained the lead, 2-1, on a Tim Massengale double, and again Shorter answered scoring one of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Charlie Gillis and Dylan Riner both singled to put runners at the corners and with Dustin Evans batting Gillis came in to score on a wild pitch.

The Cougars earned the win, 4-2, as two runs score in the seventh.

Shawn Thomas earned the win for Columbus State, after pitching 1.2 innings in relief; while allowing no runs or hits with three strikeouts. Brodie Orr recorded the loss for the Hawks; allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts over two innings of work. In total, Shorter pitchers struck out twelve batters; starter, Travis McPherson recorded 7, Orr – 2, Chadd Felder – 2, and Christian Champion – 1.

Gillis finished the day with two hits; while Riner and Forrest posted on hit each.

The Hawks will be back in action this weekend as longtime rival, Lee University, visits Rome for a three game series. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12:00pm, while Sunday's game begins at 1:00pm.

Sunday will also serves as Shorter Baseball's annual breast cancer awareness game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support those affected by breast cancer every day. The Hawks will be wearing special pink jerseys during the game; that will be auctioned off to raise additional money for the cause. The silent bidding for the game worn jerseys will begin at first pitch and continue through the game.
