Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. – After being handed a one-run, 11-inning loss in the opener, the Shorter baseball team battled back in the nightcap of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday when the Hawks handed Union a 7-4 defeat in the nightcap.
The split gives the Hawks a 5-11 overall record and a 4-4 GSC mark heading in the third and final game of the series on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
In the second game, Shorter took a 2-0 lead when
Darrius Jennings was issued a bases-loaded walk that brought
Jacob Forrest home, and
Zach Santos followed with an infield single that allowed
Dustin Evans to cross the plate.
The Hawks added three more runs in the fifth thanks to an run-scoring single by
Tyler Trenary, who later came home when Evans delivered a two-run homer, and an inning later Santos added a run-scoring double and
Will Harrison made it 7-0 with his sacrifice fly allowed Santos to score.
Union (5-9, 2-3) was able to avoid the shutout scoring two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, before Hawks reliever
Brodie Orr closed the door to seal the win.
Starter
Justin Machado picked up his first win of the season for the Hawks, going six innings giving up just four hits and one earned run.
Trenary led Shorter with three hits and an RBI, while Evans, Santos and
Bryan Mathews had two hits each.
In the opener, the Hawks held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh only to see Union tie the game when the home team opened the inning with a triple that was followed by an RBI fielder's choice that sent the game into extra frames. After Shorter was unable to take advantage of a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the top 11
th, Union scored the game-winner in the bottom half of the stanza on a one-out sacrifice fly.
Jennings and Harrison both had three hits for the Hawks, while Trenary and Mathews has two hits apiece.
The loss overshadowed a strong six-inning outing by Shorter starter
Colton Cross, who allowed five hits, no earned runs and notched six strikeouts.
Chadd Felder was tagged with the loss, pitching 4.2 innings and yielding just two hits.
