Hawks drop home opener to Carson-Newman

Box Score ROME--In their first time out at home this season, the Hawks fell to Carson-Newman 10-6.

The loss drops Shorter to 0-4 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 3-1 overall.

The Hawks took the lead early with a four run second inning. Chad Ikerd singled to lead things off and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Walker Borneman singled one batter later to bring in the run. Dustin Evans and Dylan Riner both reached base after a strike out to Jesse Gavigan, and scored on Darrius Jennings' single and a passed ball, respectively. Jennings later came around to score to give the Hawks the lead, 4-0.

Carson-Newman broke the shut out in the top of the fourth as Cody Fox scored on a single from Evan Jurjecvic. In the bottom of the inning, Shorter added some insurance; scoring twice. But it wasn't enough as the Eagles' scored nine runs during the remaining innings to earn the win, 10-6.

Michael Cogliano recorded the win for Carson-Newman; pitching 2 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts. Chadd Felder picked up the loss for the Hawks, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits through one inning of work.

Jennings finished the day with three hits. While each, Zach Santos, Ikerd, Borneman, and Evans recorded two hits.

Shorter will back in action this weekend as Young Harris visits the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex for a three game series. The teams will play one game each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; with all games beginning at 1:00pm.
