Box Score 2 ROME--The Hawks, who've been in a rough patch as of late, broke out the slump with a two game sweep of Christian Brothers. Game scores were 4-1, and 3-0, respectively.
The wins improve Shorter to 3-9 on the season, and 2-3 in conference play.
Bryan Mathews had a day to remember as he recorded five hits and five RBI in the games, with the biggest blow coming in the bottom of the tenth of game two as he smashed his first homer of the season to give the Hawks the win, 3-0.
In game one, Mathews got Shorter on the board in the first with a 2 RBI double that brought in
Ian Redetzky and
Zach Santos. One batter later,
Will Harrison singled, scoring Mathews to make it a 3-0 game.
Christian Brothers avoided the shutout with a run in the second, but that was all the offense the Bucs would muster for the game. In the seventh, Shorter tacked on an insurance run as
Darrius Jennings singled to bring in
Dustin Evans, and give the Hawks the win 4-1.
Colton Cross pitched the complete game gem for Shorter, and picked up the win. Over nine innings, Cross allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Jake Garbuzinski recorded the loss for Christian Brothers, allowing four runs on ten hits with four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Christian Champion earned his first win of the season for the Hawks in game two after coming on to pitch in relief of
Justin Machado who had allowed only three hits and a walk in seven innings of work. Champion, over three innings, allowed just one hit and a walk, while striking out two.
In addition to Mathews, Redetzky finished the day with four hits, and both,
Dylan Riner and
Jacob Forrest, recorded two hits on the day.
Shorter will close out the series with the Bucs tomorrow, Sunday, February 23, at 1:00pm from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
