Barry sweeps Baseball Hawks to begin the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Miami Shores, Fla.--Baseball dropped both games Saturday afternoon to Barry University to start the season. Game scores were 8-5 and 4-3, respectively.

In the opener, Barry scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. But, Shorter answered in the top of the fourth to tie things up as Bryan Mathews double to bring in Dylan Riner. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Bucs scored three times to regain the lead.
Charlie Gillis' 2-run homer in the fifth cut the lead to one. In the seventh Chad Ikerd scored on an error to tie the game at 4-4.

Barry rallied in the eighth to score four times to make it an 8-4 game. Jesse Gavigan homered in the ninth to round of the scoring for the Hawks.

Colton Cross earned the start for Shorter, going 4 innings, while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts. Brodie Orr came on in relief, picking up the loss, with 3 runs on 5 hits over 3.1 innings of work.

The Bucs scored twice in the second inning of game two to take the lead. The Hawks answered in the fourth, as Ian Redetzky's home run cut the lead in half. In the fifth, Barry added two runs to bring their lead to 4-1.

Ikerd's 2 RBI single in the sixth finished out the scoring for the Hawks and made it a 4-3 game.

Justin Machado earned the loss for Shorter, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits over 4 innings of work. Christian Champion pitched the final 2 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts.

Shorter will wrap up the series with Barry tomorrow. Game time is set for 12pm. The Hawks return home Wednesday to take on Carson-Newman at 2pm.
