Franklin Springs, Ga.--After a long twenty days waiting for the regional tournament to start the Hawks finally took to the field again Thursday night to face Southeastern University in the NCCAA regional semi final.
Â
The Hawks came out with the presence of the number one seeded team as it took just three minutes to get their first goal on the scoreboard as
Lucas Cavenco flicked the ball up to himself and volleyed home powerfully with his left foot. Seven minutes later Shorter netted their second goal as
Robert Ochieng found himself with space inside the box, wrestling off his defender Ochieng smashed the ball into the back of the net to put daylight between Shorter and Southeastern with just ten minutes gone in the game. Shorter continued to control the first half and with 15 to go found their third goal of the game as great combination play between Fransisco Miranda and
Irvin Espinal led to a cross that Ochieng headed back across goal to Cavenco who finished for his second goal of the game.
Hawks keeper Nicholas Ferrigno made to good saves when called upon later on in the second half.
Â
With the score 3-0 at half time Shorter found themselves in the perfect position, already having an extra days rest due to a first round bye the Hawks were able to rotate in the second half giving some key rest to starters and some valuable playing time to the rest of the Shorter team.
Â
The second half passed without much incident of note, though Southeastern managed to get themselves on the scoreboard after a scramble in the box lead to the ball being poked into goal. Ferrigno also made his finest save of the season to date with 10 minutes to go diving quickly to his left to stop a header from point blank range.
Shorter, though, saw out the rest of the game and got the win that they deserved, their 10th of the season, the Hawks will now play Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon as the no. 1 seed plays the no. 2 seed to determine the regional champion and automatic national tournament berth.
