Nashville, Tenn.--The Shorter Men's Soccer team travelled to Nashville, Tennessee Tuesday night to take on Trevecca Nazarene University in the Hawks final non-conference match of the season, and came home victorious, 3-1.
Â
Playing under the lights it was the Hawks who looked the brighter in the opening periods;
Robert Ochieng had the first clean cut chance of the game from 12 yards out, but his shot was just deflected wide. He did not have to wait long for his next chance as
Irvin Espinal whipped in the resulting corner and Ochieng, making a strong run to the near post rose to power a header into the back of the net in the 16th minute.
Shorter though could not capitalize on their goal and after keeper
Nicolas Ferrigno could only parry a shot just 4 minutes later Trevacca followed in the rebound to level the game at one all. Struggling to find their passing game on the longer grass at Trevecca the Hawks could not find a rhythm, and though each team had chances later on in the half they came in level at half time, 1-1.
Going out in the second half the Hawks looked to assert their dominance on the game and it took just 7 minutes before their pressure paid off. Winning a free kick wide on their own right hand side
Diego Gonzalez drifted a ball to the back post that found its way past attackers and defenders alike all the way into the goal.
This time the goal spurred on the Hawks and they continued to create chances with
Lucas Cavenco finding himself in front of goal on numerous occasions, with nothing but tenacious defending stopping him from finding a goal for himself. It took just another 7 minutes before Gonzalez again found himself standing over a set piece in a good position, his ball into the box again created havoc and with pressure from Cavenco and Ochieng found its way into the back of the net.
Â
Sitting at 3-1 the Hawks controlled the remainder of the second half, though Trevecca had a goal disallowed for offside later on in the game.
Shorter created many more for themselves with
Ryan Horn instrumental in everything that was positive about the Hawks play. Horn himself went close late as his curled shot whisked past the outside of the post, when on another day the Hawks would not have been un fairly done to have scored 4 or 5.
After the match Head Coach
Paulo Neto said, "It was great to get back to winning ways tonight, I thought we did a superb job on attacking set pieces. We had a slow start but stepped up in the second half and displayed some of the best soccer that we have played so far this year. We need to now carry this momentum to the road for our most difficult stretch of the year".
Â
Shorter now sits at 6-2-2 on the season and will step back into GSC action on Friday as they travel to the University of West Alabama.
