BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Shorter Men's Soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against King University Saturday afternoon at Parks Field. The draw improves Shorter to 2-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.
Both teams battled early, with neither side able to break through. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, scoring to take an early lead. Shorter continued to battle, outshooting the Tornado 5-3 in the first half while earning three corner kicks. The Hawks entered halftime trailing by one goal.
After another scoreless stretch to begin the second half,
Gustavo Ferreira delivered the equalizer, scoring his first goal as a Hawk to breathe life back into Shorter. The Hawks continued to generate opportunities offensively, putting pressure on the King defense throughout the half.
Shorter's defense was equally impressive, shutting down King's attack and preventing the Tornado from regaining the lead. Despite several opportunities late, the Hawks could not find a second goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Shorter finished the match with a 15-9 advantage in shots, including six shots on goal.
"I am disappointed with the result today," said Head Coach Roberto Hernandez. "I thought the boys played well enough in the first 18 minutes to earn a chance. We didn't put it away and we let the other team come in and get a goal. When we were up a man, I don't think we had the urgency until the last eight minutes. The boys did well, battling back for a draw. It is tough to get a draw on the road, so I am proud of that. We are looking forward to working and growing as a team, as well as honoring God on and off the field, as we get ready for Mars Hill."
