Adams and Williams Lead Lady Hawks over West Georgia

An exciting fourth quarter ended in favor of the Shorter Lady Hawks, as they defeated the West Georgia Wolves, 51-44. The Lady Hawks have now won four straight games.

The game began slowly for both squads, as the two teams combined to score eight points over the first 5:25. Shorter led 6-2 coming out of the first media timeout, but West Georgia (5-19, 5-13) managed four straight points to tie the contest. The majority of the Lady Hawks' scoring happened over the final 1:27 of the opening period. A three pointer by Kayla Tillie gave Shorter (16-6, 13-5) a 9-6 advantage. After a Wolves basket, Tillie converted a layup of her own, and Jackie Hudson scored with less than 20 seconds remaining to give the Lady Hawks a five-point lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter was nearly even, as SU managed only two more points than the Wolves of West Georgia. Taylor Adams opened the quarter with four straight points for Shorter, but UWG's Terrianna Cave answered with five of her own. The Wolves got as close as four with under a minute remaining, but Tamarr Williams connected from beyond the arc with 33 seconds to go, giving the Lady Hawks a 25-18 halftime lead.

Williams opened the third period with a layup, but after that the Lady Hawks found themselves struggling to score. With the lead at three points, Adams made Shorter's second field goal of the quarter, pushing the lead to five points. The Lady Hawks would score twice more over the final 2:52 of the third as Adams' layup with under five seconds remaining gave home team a seven-point advantage, 33-26, heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded threes to begin the fourth before Adams scored four quick points for Shorter. Thanks to her layups, the Lady Hawks took their largest lead of the game, 40-29. Down 11, West Georgia refused to quit. The Wolves went on a 10-1 run to pull within two, 41-39.

From there, things turned in favor of Shorter. Williams connected twice from beyond the arc, the second swishing through the net with little time remaining on the shot clock. She extended the Lady Hawks lead to eight, 49-41, and home team never looked back. Adams gave SU a nine-point advantage, hitting one of two free throws after a West Georgia technical foul. The Wolves got no closer than seven, as Shorter was victorious, 50-41.

Adams led the Lady Hawks with a double-double, scoring a game-high 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Williams added 14 points of her own. Terrianna Cave led the Wolves with 14 points. Shorter shot 40.8% from the field, while the West Georgia hit 32.7% of its shots.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action when they conclude a four-game home stand against Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama. Tipoff is set for 2 PM EST from Rome, Georgia.
