Tillie Helps Lady Hawks Defeat West Alabama

The Shorter Lady Hawks defeated the West Alabama Tigers 75-61 in Gulf South Conference play on Saturday thanks to stellar second half play from Kayla Tillie.

Shorter (17-6, 14-5) jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the first quarter. After trailing by six early, West Alabama (8-15, 5-13) tied the contest at 12 via four points from Sydney King. The Lady Hawks broke the tie by going on a 12-0 run to end the first quarter. Three pointers by Raven Fair and Killie accounted for six of those 12 points. Taylor Adams scored four points, while Shakierya McClendon capped the run by making two free throws with 24 seconds left in the quarter. At the end of the first, Shorter led 24-12.

The Lady Hawks extended their lead to 17 in the second as McClendon scored five points in 30 seconds. Trailing 29-12, the Tigers pulled within ten at 35-25, but Maggie Peeples hit a three pointer to extend Shorter's lead to 13.  West Alabama ended the half on a 4-0 run, but the home team led 38-29 at the intermission.

In the third, SU extended its lead to 19. Tillie scored five in the period for the Lady Hawks, while Tamarr Williams added a three pointer of her own. The Tigers made a comeback in the fourth, outscoring Shorter 24-19. Tillie scored five more points in the final quarter to thwart UWA's comeback attempt and give the Lady Hawks the victory.

Adams led Shorter with 20 points. McClendon and Tillie also scored in double figures, adding 15 and 14 points respectively. Ariel Wilson scored 15 points for West Alabama.

Vic Mitchell's Lady Hawks will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Cleveland, Mississippi to take on Delta State. Tipoff between the Lady Hawks and Lady Statesmen is set for 6:30 PM EST.
