A cold shooting night doomed the Shorter Lady Hawks (11-4, 8-3) as they fell to Gulf South Conference opponent Lee University (12-4, 9-2) 64-48 in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Saturday night.
The Hawks failed to score for the first 2:54 of the contest, as Lee scored the first eight points, with four coming from Carrie Cheeks. A jump shot by Kayla Tillie put the Lady Hawks on the board. Shorter cut the Lee Flames lead to 8-6 via a Taylor Adams layup, but unfortunately that would be the closest they would get all night. After trailing by four at the end of the first, the Lady Hawks were outscored by seven points in the second period and trailed the Lady Flames 30-19 at the intermission.
Things did not improve for Shorter in the second half, as Lee sophomore Erin Walsh found her shot. Walsh scored 15 of her 21 points in the second as the Lady Flames pulled away from the Lady Hawks. Shorter shot 10 of 32 from the field in the second half, compared to 59.1% for Lee.
For the game, freshman Tillie led Shorter with 12 points, while senior Tamarr Williams added 10. The Lady Flames outrebounded the Lady Hawks 40-31 and shot 72.2% from the charity stripe, while Shorter made only 52.4% of its free throw attempts.
Shorter will be back in action on Thursday, January 21, as it hosts Christian Brothers University. Tipoff is set for 6 PM EST from the Winthrop-King Centre on the campus of Shorter University.
