Lady Hawks split as Moseley earns 200th win

Florence, S.C. -- Volleyball head coach, Jon Moseley, recorded his 200th win at the helm of the Lady Hawks Friday afternoon as Shorter topped Erskine, 3-1, in the first game of the season before falling to Francis Marion later in the day in a decisive fifth set, 3-2.

The Lady Hawks started the day by dropping the first set to Erskine, 25-22, but bounced back to win the remaining sets to give Moseley the victory. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18.

Jasmine Crook and Elizabeth Dowd both recorded double-doubles of kills and digs in the first match. Crook with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Dowd posted 14 kills and 10 digs. Newcomer, Cheyenne McLemore chipped in the 18 digs to lead the Lady Hawks against the Flying Fleet.

Dena Pierce also posted a double-double on the day, recording 16 assists and 14 digs. Cheyenne Frady led Shorter with 25 assists in the game.

It was a seesaw affair against Francis Marion, as Shorter won sets one and three and the Patriots took two, four, and five. Set scores were 15-25, 25-13, 16-25, 28-26, 15-10, respectively.

The Lady Hawks led the match 2-1, and jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, but the Patriots fought back to earn the win and force the tiebreaker.  Shorter led by as many as 14 in the game, and were within two points of the win, leading 23-12, when FMU went on an 11-0 run to tie the game. The Lady Hawks answered to bring match point, but couldn't push ahead and the Patriots rallied to win the set 28-26.

In the fifth set, FMU took the lead early and didn't let up to earn the win and finish the day 2-0.

Crook lead the way in kills, posting the only double-figure total in the match, with 14; while also adding 21 digs. Dowd and McLemore chipped in with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Frady led the Lady Hawks with 24 assists in the game while also recording 12 digs and Pierce added 17 assists and 14 digs.

Shorter will return to action in Florence, S.C. Saturday as they take on Mount Olive beginning at 11:00am and Lander at 3:00pm.
