MLAX falls to Wingate, 10-9, in overtime

Box Score Wingate, N.C.--Shorter men's lacrosse came up just short Saturday afternoon, falling to Wingate University, 10-9 in overtime.

The loss drops the Hawks to 4-6 on the season.

Shorter scored twice in the first period; while holding the Bulldogs to one goal. Michael Santry started things off for the Hawks as he netted the first goal of the game in the opening minute. Matt Kristiansen followed to give Shorter the 2-0 lead. Wingate got on the board with 5:41 remaining in the frame to trail 2-1 going into the second quarter.

The Hawks added three goals in the in the period as Jordan Butz, Zachery Dirkse, and James VandenBrink each found the back of the net and Shorter took a, 5-2, advantage into halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams scored twice – Kristiansen at the 14:18 mark, and VandenBrink with 3:27 to play for the Hawks; while Chase Watts and Bryce Sneed netted goals for the Bulldogs.

The final frame opened with Shorter leading, 7-4, but Wingate scored five times, while holding the Hawks to two goals to tie the game, 9-9, and force the extra time. During the period, Kristiansen scored both of Shorter's goals, for a total of four in the game.

The game winner came for Wingate as Sneed found the back of the net on a feed from Austin Murphy with 2:27 to play in overtime.

JR Willers played the complete game in goal for the Hawks; making 11 saves on 21 shots faced. The Bulldogs' Michael Connor made 12 saves while also facing 21 shots.

In total, Wingate outshot Shorter 41-33, held the advantage in groundballs 37-31, and won 15 of 22 face-offs.

The Hawks will be back in action, Wednesday, April 2, as Huntingdon visits Ben Brady Field for a 7pm start.
