Men's soccer falls to Alabama Huntsville, 2-1

Box Score By Chris Riley

ROME--
In a tight match between two evenly matched teams Friday night it was the visiting University of Alabama Huntsville who walked away with a hard earned 2-1 Gulf South Conference victory.

With the teams beginning the match fighting to impose themselves on the game it was Shorter (8-5-2, 7-4-1) who came up with the first real chance of the match in the 22nd minute as confusion over the ball being out for a goal kick let to the ball eventually being played back to Balazs Horvath, who blazed his shot high from 12 yards out. Next to register a chance was Julian Kitkowski who did well to cut in off the right wing with 9 minutes to go in the half, his shot though passed just wide of the left hand post.

With two minutes to play in the half Shorter goalkeeper Nicolas Ferrigno was called into action for the first time, and managed to make his way across his goal to his left post in time to bat away a strong shot from the outside of the box.

With the teams coming in level at half time it was either teams to win and the Hawks came out with that attitude at the creating two great scoring opportunities in the opening two minutes of the half. The first of which fell to senior Kyle Stonecipher who found a ball bobbling on the edge of the Huntsville penalty area, though he could not connect properly with his shot it took Shorter just another minute to create a goal scoring opportunity, this time Lucas Cavenco missing the chance to score.

Shorter continued the pressure in search of the winning goal and thought they had done so when in a ball cut back to Pierre Lepage hit the target, only to find the Huntsville keeper well placed to deny him. From the chance Huntsville took advantage of their opportunity to break and immediately played the ball from end to end and found a goal for themselves.

Down 1-0 but still with plenty of time to play Shorter knew there was no need to panic and it was just ten minutes later that the Hawks won themselves a free kick around the penalty area, Diego Gonzalez stepped up to curl the ball all the way in at the back post to level the game.

With individual battles going on all over the field the game was evenly matched throughout, though Shorter created the best chances to score and with Ferrigno in goal only having made one save all night the Hawks paid for their wastefulness as with two minutes left a UAH free kick played in with pace found a deflection and rolled its way into the bottom corner of the Shorter net.

Despite outshooting the Chargers 17-7 in the game the Hawks came away with a heartbreaking defeat.

The game typified the close fought nature of the GSC as any one on their day can come up with a result, Shorter will look to put the disappointment behind them as they play their final home game of the season on Sunday vs Union University at 3:00pm; which will also serve at senior day for the Hawks.
