Memphis--After completing the sweep of Delta State Friday afternoon the Men's Soccer team completed a perfect weekend on the road Sunday by doing the same against Christian Brothers, beating the current conference champions for the 2nd time this season and leaving Memphis with a two nil victory.
Keeping a clean sheet the Hawks have now improved to 8-4-2 on the season and guaranteed themselves a spot at the NCCAA regionals this coming post season.
It was 13 minutes into the game before either team were able to muster an opportunity, the chance falling to
Lucas Cavenco whose shot was tipped wide of the post. The chance proved to be a warning shot as from two resulting corners the partnership of
Diego Gonzalez and
Robert Ochieng linked up for the 4th time this season as Ochieng again rose above everyone to head home the opening goal from a corner.
Throughout the 90 minutes CBU continually played for the long throw in, and their best chance came from a throw on the right hand side that pinballed around the box before eventually being cleared. With
Sam Clare magnificent at the back both on the ground and in the air the Hawks dealt with the throw-ins well, and CBU was unable to create any other clear cut chances for themselves.
Cavenco again went close towards the end of the half and with
Balazs Horvath and
Julian Kitkowski narrowly missing chances it was the Hawks who looked more likely to find the second goal of the game, and it came with 8 minutes left on the clock as another fantastic set piece from Gonzalez found
Jonas Uhlhorn at the back post who volleyed home for his second goal of the season. Despite some late CBU pressure in the half the Hawks saw out the half and came in buoyant at two nil.
In the second half it was again Shorter who created the better chances, the first of which coming to
Irvin Espinal who fizzed a ball along the floor to the back post that the keeper parried; managing to collapse on the ball before the advancing Cavenco could tap in the rebound. With Shorter holding the two goal lead and CBU with nothing to lose it was the home team who pushed on in search of a goal, however, the Hawks back four stood strong and again limited CBU's best chances to scrambles from long throw-ins.
With Christian Brothers having much of the possession in the second half Shorter was comfortable in clogging the middle and keeping their clean sheet, and the visitors twice went close late on in the half with Espinal and Gonzalez each having chances to widen the gap in the score. With 1 minute left in the game Shorter keeper
Nicolas Ferrigno was stretched for the first time, and made the save he needed to when called upon to ensure the Hawks walked out of Memphis with a two nil victory, outshooting CBU 13-12 in the game.
Gonzalez and Ochieng were particularly impressive this weekend for the Hawks with the former having 3 assists in the two games and the latter having 3 goals and 1 assist. Though the Hawks were impressive going forward equally impressive was the manner in which the team defended throughout the weekend, allowing just 1 goal and outshooting their opponents on each occasion.
After achieving their first goal of the season in qualifying for the NCCAA regionals the Hawks will return home to face Alabama Huntsville on Friday evening in another top of the conference clash. Game is set for 7:00pm.
