Men's Soccer

Men's soccer falls to No. 21 West Florida, 2-1

Box Score By Chris Riley

Pensacola, Fla.--
The Hawks played their second game of the weekend on the campus of West Florida as Shorter took on the No. 21 ranked UWF on Sunday. The Argos came away victorious for the second time this season, 2-1.

The loss drops the Hawks to 6-4-2 overall, and 5-3-1 in conference play.

It was UWF who came out stronger, controlling much of the early possession without creating too much of a goal threat, the Hawks grew into the game and thought that they had found an early goal when Matt Goss made a late break from left back to find himself in a great scoring opportunity. Goss' shot, though, was straight at the 'keeper.
They did not have to wait long for their next opportunity, however, as a UWF player was called for obstruction on a Shorter corner, resulting in an indirect free kick just ten yards away from goal. Irvin Espinal's shot, though, was cleared off the line.

Shorter's dominance finally paid off as an Espinal free kick from the left hand side swung in to meet the head of Jonas Uhlhorn who scored his first goal in a Shorter uniform.

The Hawks could not hold their lead for long as West Florida came back just five minutes later, finding a neat through ball in a tight space the midfielder finished well from the edge of the box. The ball beat the returning Austen Trevers in the Shorter goal; who did well on his return to the team.

The teams came in level at one a piece at half time, with each side having missed chances and feeling unlucky not to be ahead after the first half of play.
In the increasing heat of the Florida sun the Hawks came out sloppy early in the second half and in the 55th minute a poorly cleared ball into the Shorter box found a man open on the back post, he cut inside to score West Florida's second of the match and the lead.

Knowing they had to change to get back in the game Shorter pushed forward and began to create chances of their own and with 13 minutes left to play Diego Gonzalez thought that he had got the goal to level it, only to look over and see the linesman flagging for offside. Shorter continued to push forward and two excellent Robert Ochieng balls into the box evaded everyone, while Lucas Cavenco missed the Hawks final chance of the game.

As is the strength in depth of the Gulf South Conference the Hawks came away with nothing from a weekend where they thought they had done enough to get something out of each game. Shorter will look to rebound on Friday as the Hawks face another weekend away, taking on Delta State first followed by Christian Brothers on Sunday. Friday's game in Cleveland, Miss. and Sunday's game in Memphis, Tenn. will both begin at 4:30 pm eastern.
