West Alabama tops men's soccer, 2-1

Box Score By Chris Riley

Livingston, Ala.--
Shorter men's soccer fell on the road, 3-0, to the Tigers of West Alabama Friday night.

The loss drops the Hawks to 6-3-2 overall, and 5-2-1 in the Gulf South Conference.

The game started off at a fast pace with neither team able to make any clear cut chances; until a curled shot from the edge of the box found its way through a host of bodies and inside the far post in the 20th minute to give UWA a one nil lead. The Hawks came back well from conceding and with 15 minutes to play in the first half Robert Ochieng glided past his marker to be hacked down inside the penalty area, Irvin Espinal stepped up to convert the kick and shorter were back level.

Shorter looked to gain momentum from the goal though most of their attacks were thwarted prematurely by fouls, forcing them to play more from set pieces than open play. The game stayed tied until, breaking away from a Shorter corner West Alabama won a free kick of their own in a dangerous position wide on their left, the free kick was crossed in well and met by the UWA attacker to give them a 2-1 lead.

The second half continued in a similar fashion as shorter took the game to UWA, though most of their breakthroughs in play were again ended through fouls as Espinal twice beat his man, once down the left and once down the right and was taken out each time. The yellow cards racked up for UWA who eventually finished the game with 6, while miraculously managing to keep all 11 players on the field.

Though shorter dominated the possession stats and controlled play inside the UWA half. Good chances were hard to come by as West Alabama kept very tight and compact, not allowing Shorter to operate in the areas that they wanted to.

With 8 minutes to play the Hawks thought they had carved out the opportunity to level the game as Espinal again beat his man down the right hand side he found Ochieng all alone at the back post, with the open goal gaping infront of him Ochieng's shot struck the crossbar. Shorter threw everybody forward in the dying minutes, but they could not find the equalizer that they deserved and West Alabama earned the 2-1 win.

The Hawks dominance showed in the shots column which they lead 9-2 in the second half, and 15-7 overall.

Shorter will remain on the road for the rest of the weekend and travel to Pensacola to play GSC rival West Florida on sunday, October 13. Game time is set for 1:30pm.
