ROME, Ga. – The Shorter University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Erskine Saturday morning at Ben Brady Field.
The win marks the second consecutive season the Hawks have opened their campaign with a victory.
Shorter and Erskine battled early, with Gianna Estavillo firing multiple shots toward the Fleet defense as both sides traded opportunities. Neither team was able to gain the upper hand until an intentional handball by Erskine gave the Hawks a penalty opportunity. Estavillo converted from the spot for her first career goal as a Hawk, giving Shorter a 1-0 advantage just before halftime.
The Hawks' defense remained strong throughout the second half, fending off multiple offensive attacks from the Fleet. Shorter continued to create opportunities on the offensive end and held on for the 1-0 victory.

Shorter will remain in Rome Tuesday as the Hawks host Emmanuel for a 5 p.m. match at Ben Brady Field.
