CENTRAL, S.C. – The Shorter University men's soccer team battled throughout the night but came up short in a 1-0 road loss to Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at Childs Field. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in conference.
The Hawks came out aggressively, generating early chances from Carter Morningstar and Alex Hernandez, who each put shots on target in the opening minutes. Despite Shorter's strong start, the Warriors capitalized on a corner kick opportunity in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Shorter continued to press forward for the remainder of the first half, creating several scoring opportunities and holding a 10-9 advantage in shots. However, the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer and headed into halftime trailing by a goal.
The Shorter defense turned in a solid second-half effort, limiting Southern Wesleyan's chances and preventing the Warriors from adding to their lead. Unfortunately, the Hawks were unable to generate an offensive breakthrough after the break, failing to record a shot in the final 45 minutes. Despite a determined effort on both ends of the field, Shorter was unable to overcome the early deficit and ultimately fell 1-0 to Southern Wesleyan.
"Going down two men is never easy", said Head Coach Roberto Hernandez. "Before the first red card, I thought we were doing very, very well. We were finding the right pockets, creating chances, and limiting their opportunities. When the first red card happened, I was super proud of the way the team responded. I think we still proved that we could compete, and we continued to create plenty of chances. In fact, I thought it was a pretty even game, and we showcased our ability. The second red card put us on the back foot, but I'm proud of the way the team fought. Not conceding a goal while being two men down is something incredible. That said, we lost our heads, and we've got to do better. I don't think we represented Christ the way we should have. We want to make sure we're giving all the glory to Jesus Christ and representing Him in the right way".
