Hawks Drop Series to Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Shorter Hawks (15-26, 6-24 CC) fell to Mount Olive (26-18, 18-12 CC) Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 defeat in game two, before being defeated 12-7 in game three.

GAME TWO

Game two began with early action from both sides before settling into a defensive battle as the innings progressed. The Hawks struck first when Reece Newberry lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Griffin Tamucci home, giving Shorter a 1-0 lead in the opening frames.

Mount Olive responded quickly, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to plate an unearned run and even the score at 1-1. From there, both teams locked in defensively, combining for three straight scoreless innings as pitchers and fielders on both sides kept runners off the bases and limited scoring opportunities.

The Trojans broke the stalemate in the fourth inning, pushing across a run to take a 2-1 lead. Offense remained hard to come by for both teams, with the bats going quiet through the middle innings. Mount Olive added an insurance run in the sixth to extend its lead to 3-1.

Shorter continued to battle at the plate down the stretch, but was unable to generate the timely hits needed to complete a comeback, ultimately falling 3-1 in game one.

GAME THREE

The Shorter Hawks dropped game three of the series in a 12-7 contest, as Mount Olive used early offense to build a lead that proved too much to overcome.

The Trojans struck first and controlled the tempo through the middle innings, taking advantage of timely hitting and capitalizing on free bases to stretch their lead. Shorter struggled to find consistency early but showed resilience late in the game.

The Hawks got on the board in the seventh inning and added another run in the eighth to chip away at the deficit. Trailing heading into the ninth, Shorter mounted its best offensive push of the game, plating five runs on a series of clutch hits to narrow the gap. Despite the late rally, the comeback effort fell short as Mount Olive's earlier production held up for the 12-7 final.

Micah Shipman led the Hawks at the plate with a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases. The Hawks totaled eight hits in the contest while continuing to battle until the final out.
