FERRUM, Va.- The Shorter Hawks split Saturday's doubleheader against Ferrum, unfortunately not being able to clinch the series. The Hawks fell in game two 6-2 before responding with a 10-6 win in game three.
GAME TWO
Game two began with an RBI fielder's choice from Ferrum along with an error to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead heading into the second. After a quiet second inning, Shorter responded in the top of the third with an RBI double from Micah Shipman to send around Josh Tattershall to put the game within a run. Drake Cobb then gave Micah Shipman the green light with an RBI single to tie it up at two apiece.
The Panthers would grab the lead back in the fourth with an RBI single of their own, and would then score three more runs throughout the sixth to put the score at 6-2 Ferrum, where it would remain until the end of the game for the final.
GAME THREE
The Hawks landed the first punch in game three with Michael Barron stealing home to put the Hawks ahead in the first. In the second, they kept on swinging with both Reece Newberry and Jonathan Vigoa scoring on a Drake Cobb double, giving Shorter an early 3-0 lead.In the home half, Ferrum landed a jab of their own by driving in two runs on a double up the middle to center, putting it within a run.
In the third, however, Shorter continued to refrain from pulling any punches, as Drake Cobb punched Wilmer Henriquez's ticket to home on a double to center, making it 4-2 Hawks. Reece Newberry then allowed Drake Cobb to score by grounding into a fielder's choice, giving Shorter a three-run lead. In the fourth, Wilmer Henriquez allowed the Hawks to score in their fourth straight inning with an RBI single down the left-field line, sending in Cameron Adams. Reece Newberry made it five straight innings for Shorter with a flare down the left-field line to send around Brooks McKenna and Isaiah Sims, giving Shorter an 8-2 lead.
Shorter would slow down as Ferrum re-entered the runs column in the home half of the fifth and sixth with both an RBI single and an RBI triple, but Shorter quickly kept up the pace they had started with in the eighth as Michael Barron kissed goodbye to his fifth baseball of the year, driving in both he and Micah Shipman for a 10-5 Hawks lead heading into the ninth. Ferrum would attempt to rally back with three outs left, as they were able to score a run on a sac-fly, but the Hawks' cushion was too large, and Shorter avoided the sweep with a 10-6 victory to end the road trip.
"Not a great weekend by any means", said Head Coach Wes Timmons. "But when you're dealing with as many injuries as we have right now, every win is a blessing. We'll keep working, and some of our younger guys will continue to get their chance. God remains great!"
