Hawks Fall in Final Seconds to Ferrum

FERRUM, Va.- Despite a resilient comeback in the third, the Hawks fell to Ferrum in the final seconds in a 63-61 defeat. 

The Hawks and Panthers traded baskets early in the opening frame, with multiple lead changes occurring. Both teams continued to battle, with Ferrum grabbing the 16-13 advantage after one. Amya Patterson came out firing with back-to-back triples in the second quarter to make it a 19-19 game. The Panthers responded with a commanding 16-4 run to take a 35-23 lead as the Hawks struggled to contain Ferrum. The Panthers exerted control and entered the half in front 40-28. 

The Hawks came out hot in the third quarter, going on a 15-3 run fueled by Amiya Redus and Chelsy Singleton to even the score. Shorter continued to fight, as Aijah Manning put Shorter ahead 51-49 before the final period. The fourth quarter proved to be an entertaining one as four lead changes occurred. Both teams continued to battle with Amiya Redus evening the score at 60 with a minute remaining. After a solid defensive possession, Aijah Manning drew a foul to get herself to the line. Manning split her trip at the line, putting Shorter ahead 61-60. Following this, the Panthers connected on a three with eight seconds remaining to claim the lead. The Hawks had one last opportunity, but would unfortunately come up short as Amiya Redus' layup rolled around the rim in a 63-61 final. 

As a unit, Shorter shot a respectable 21-46 (45.7%) from the field. Aijah Manning led the Hawks with 15 points while Amya Patterson scored 14 and pulled down six rebounds. Amiya Redus and Chelsy Singleton closed out the Hawks' offensive production, with Redus finishing with 13 points and three steals, and Singleton pouring in 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Shorter will stay on the road as they travel to Young Harris to face off against the Mountain Lions in a crucial game for the Southwest standings. Tip-off will take place on Tuesday, February 10 at 5:00 PM.
