YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.- For the second year in a row, the Shorter Hawks Women's Basketball team claimed the Southwest Division of the Conference of the Carolinas as they defeated Young Harris on the road in a 57-48 win.
Both teams traded baskets early, with strong defense being played as well. After being tied at seven, the Hawks found their groove, closing the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take the 15-7 lead. The Mountain Lions did not go down easily, as the Hawks struggled to contain their offense, which would outscore them 22-6 in the frame and take the 29-21 lead heading into the break.
The Hawks responded well after a rough second quarter, beginning the third on a 9-2 run to find themselves back in the game. After nodding it all up at 30, the hosts managed to rebuild their lead, scoring six straight. Shorter continued to push the envelope, as
Amiya Redus tied the game at 36 with a free throw to close the quarter.
A tip-in by
Aijah Manning gave the Hawks their first lead since the opening quarter to start the fourth. Young Harris continued to draw out their lead as a converted and-one put them ahead 45-39. After a 30-second timeout, the momentum shifted in favor of Shorter. The Hawks' offense started to prosper thanks to an all-around team effort where many contributed. Shorter defensively prevented the Mountain Lions from getting anything going. Shorter ended up outscoring Young Harris 18-3 in the final five minutes of action, displaying an incredible sequence of offense mixed with a smothering defense. The Hawks would walk away with a 57-48 victory, claiming the Southwest Division for the second straight year.
The Hawks, despite their shooting woes, had four score in double-figures, with
Amiya Redus leading the way with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Chelsy Singleton chipped in 14 points and five rebounds, while
Amya Patterson scored 11 points.
Aijah Manning recorded a double-double to round out the Hawks, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks held the Mountain Lions to 28.6% from the floor, while also forcing them to shoot 21.7% from three.
