Patterson Wins it at the Horn for the Hawks

ROME- A go-ahead bucket by Amya Patterson with less than four seconds remaining helped the Hawks soar to a 61-59 victory over Emmanuel Wednesday night.

After a quiet start to the contest, the Hawks took control in the opening frame by going on an 11-3 run. The Hawks remained in control, playing strong on the defensive side while staying efficient from the field as they took the 17-9 lead entering the next quarter. The Lions made a dent in the Hawks' lead early into the second, but the Hawks responded well thanks to an aerial assault from distance by Amiya Redus. Redus helped the Hawks extend their lead, scoring nine points in the quarter as Shorter headed into the break in front 30-22.

The Hawks carried their efficiency from the first half immediately into the third quarter, as Chelsy Singleton connected from behind the arc to give the Hawks a 37-25 lead, which was their biggest on the night. The visitors began to find their shot, as they managed to cut down the Hawks' lead little by little. Shorter closed the quarter in front 51-41 after a solid display of defense in the final two minutes of the third. The Hawks' offense began to quiet down in the final frame, as they struggled to convert from the field. The Lions took advantage, going on a dominant 15-2 run that lasted for six minutes as the Hawks fell behind 59-57. With less than a minute to go, Chelsy Singleton answered the call, tying the game with a jumper. After an empty possession by the Lions, Shorter drew a foul with seven seconds left, as they were set to inbound. On the inbound, the ball found its way into Amya Patterson's hands, as she delivered the go-ahead layup with just three seconds left. The visitors had one more chance, but would fall short as Chelsy Singleton secured the victory with a steal as the Hawks escaped with a 61-59 win.

The Hawks shot a solid 27-68 (39.7%) from the floor, with their most shot attempts all season. Defensively, the Hawks forced 21 turnovers to their ten. Chelsy Singleton led Shorter with 17 points, five rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Amiya Redus followed with 16 points and four steals as well.
