FLORENCE, S.C.- The Shorter Hawks (6-6) fell to #23 Francis Marion (13-1) 6-5 in their series finale Saturday afternoon.
After a quiet opening frame, the Hawks got on the board thanks to a throwing error by the Patriots that drove in two runs and gave Shorter the early advantage. Shorter bagged another run to lead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second. The hosts responded with two runs of their own to make a dent in the Shorter lead.
After a silent fourth inning,
Wilmer Henriquez and
Drake Cobb got things rolling in the fifth as the pair each drove in a run to make it 5-2 Shorter's way. Francis Marion answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth before scoring two more to regain the lead. The Hawks entered the final frame with an opportunity to take the lead, but unfortunately came up short in a 6-5 defeat.
Jay O'Neal gave the Hawks a solid few innings, going 5.1 IP, striking out four.

"The boys played better top to bottom this weekend than last", said Head Coach Wes Timmons. "You have to give Francis Marion their credit. They're one of the better-coached teams in this conference. Combine that with the talent on their roster, and you know why they'll be playing in a regional in a couple of months. We're still trying to navigate our lineup with all the injuries, but every week that passes is one week closer to getting everyone back. I truly believe that when everyone is healthy, we'll be a team that's tough to deal with. We pitched a little better this weekend, but ultimately not good enough to get a win. So there's still improvement to be had. We look forward to the challenge, and God is still great! So there's no panic. Just an opportunity to continue to improve".
