ROME- The Shorter Baseball team closed the door in a non-conference battle against Augusta on Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout. Tuesday's win puts the Hawks' record over .500 (7-6) as they head to Young Harris for their third series of conference play.
The mound was dominant from both teams on Tuesday, with Grayson Goss slinging four innings with two strikeouts, one walk, and two hits to start things off for Shorter. In the fifth, the Hawks brought in Grady Parsons to clock in a quality inning, and he did just that, allowing zero hits while only walking one. Logan Bryson took Parsons' shift in the sixth, picking up a strikeout before Colby Schachtner took the Hawks from the eighth to the end. Schachtner dominated in his two innings in the spotlight, walking one, allowing a hit, and striking out the side in the top of the ninth to clinch the 3-0 shutout victory.
The longball was the main attraction in Tuesday's bout. Augusta's pitching was dominant, with six strikeouts between all three arms used on Tuesday, but the Hawks were able to take advantage of some cracks in the wall. In the third inning, Brooks McKenna took first on a ball four, and then stole second to find himself in scoring position. Drake Cobb stepped into the batter's box looking for a way to drive him in, and found it in a fastball he would connect with and send over the left field wall for a two-run shot. In the very next frame, Josh Tattershall would crush his fifth of the year into the trees behind centerfield to make it a 3-0 ballgame, where it would remain all the way to the finish line.
"Our bullpen pitched really well today", said Head Coach Wes Timmons. "A lot of times at this level it is a coin flip, so to watch our guys come in and attack the strike zone is really good to see. The reason we won today was our bullpen, so if we can carry that into this weekend I really like our chances".
