WILSON, N.C.- The Shorter Hawks Women's Basketball team came up short Monday night in Wilson Gymnasium to Barton in a 66-58 final.
The Hawks struggled coming out the gates, with the hosts jumping ahead to an 8-2 lead. The Bulldogs continued to control the opening frame, leading 24-12 after one. The Hawks had a much better second period, as shots began to fall. After Barton took a 31-20 lead, Shorter stormed back by closing the first half on a 10-2 run.
Chelsy Singleton drilled a three at the horn to cap off the run and bring the Hawks to within three at the break.
Barton once again opened with a run, outscoring Shorter 13-2 in the first five minutes to take the 43-32 lead. Much like the second quarter, the Hawks went on another run fueled by Singleton and
Amiya Redus, making it a 46-44 game with Barton leading after three. The Hawks finally regained the lead with an
Amiya Redus free throw to begin the fourth, but would once again fall victim to a run by the Bulldogs. The Hawks continued to fight and scrap, but it would not be enough as they fell in a 66-58 final.
As a unit, the Hawks shot 23-57 (40.4%) from the field as
Chelsy Singleton led with 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Amiya Redus scored 16 points as
Aijah Manning chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
