Hawks' Efficient Night Propels Them to 91-86 Win Over Mount Olive

ROME- The Shorter Men's Basketball team defeated Mount Olive Saturday afternoon in a 91-86 win backed by a season-high 60% from the field as a unit.

The Trojans came out the gate firing, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The Hawks would fight to regain the lead back, as a Donovan Shangase three at the 7:53 mark gave Shorter the 27-25 lead. Both teams continued to fire on all cylinders as the high-scoring period moved along. After the Trojans tied it at 32, Jalien Bush drilled a three as David Compere followed with a coast-to-coast layup to give the Hawks the 37-32 lead. Shorter continued to shoot the ball well as Jalien Bush gave Shorter the 44-37 lead heading into the break with another three.

The Hawks continued their hot shooting into the second frame as they managed to extend their lead. The Hawks continued to roll as they extended their lead to as much as 17. The Trojans, however, clawed their way back into the contest by going on a 13-4 run to make it a six-point game. A Ja'Myas Davis three calmed the Hawks before the Trojans fired with one of their own to make it an 85-80 game. Mount Olive continued to stay on the heels of Shorter as they converted on a layup to cut it to two with just 1:16 remaining. With less than a minute to go, Donovan Shangase put the game out of reach for Mount Olive, scoring on back-to-back layups eight seconds apart to take the 90-84 lead. The Hawks held on to snap their six-game skid, taking the 91-84 win.

Shorter was wildly efficient, shooting a season-best 33-55 (60%) from the floor, followed by a 13-24 (54.2%) night from three. Donovan Shangase led all scorers with 26 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Jalien Bush followed with a career-high 21 points and six rebounds as Ja'Myas Davis chipped in with 16 points. David Compere scored a season-high 14 points off the bench as Chris Bibbs rounded out the Hawks with 11 points and nine rebounds.

"I am just incredibly proud of our guys", said Head Coach Wade Anderson. "With a few guys out, our seniors stepped up and we had guys working so hard on the boards as well as finishing plays. We just have to keep going with this momentum as we finish out with these last three games".
