Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hawks Light the Fuse Late to Take Down North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C.- The Shorter Women's Basketball Team gained all the momentum they needed in the latter half to surge past North Greenville and walk away with a 61-53 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks drew first blood off a successful drive down the right lane from Amiya Redus, but would then only score once more in the first six minutes, allowing the Trailblazers to go on a 12-0 run. The Hawks then maintained a steady pace with North Greenville, thanks to some premier firepower from Aijah Manning, but would still end the first down 18-11.

Amiya Redus entered the second frame swinging for the Hawks, the first drive coming off a steal from Jaliyah Zackery and the second off another steal from Amari Butler, cutting the deficit to three. Back-to-back triples from Chelsy Singleton were all it took for Shorter to wrestle the lead back by a single point early in the second. However, North Greenville would regain their footing and end the half up 33-30.

Amiya Redus continued her hot streak in the second half, converting on three scores inside the perimeter put the Hawks back on top by three points. It was push and pull for most of the middle minutes of the quarter, but North Greenville was not able to grab the lead back once. After two bonus-distance buckets from Amari Butler, it would be the Hawks ending the third with an eleven-point cushion, up 52-41.

The fourth quarter began with the Hawks remaining in control. Chelsy Singleton hit her third triple of the night with just over a minute left, combined with Rhyan Wilson and Amiya Redus chipping in from the charity stripe with seconds left on the clock, and the Hawks had blazed a trail of despair for North Greenville, walking out of Hayes Gymnasium with a 61-53 victory.

The Hawks shot an impressive 36% (21-of-57) from the field and a solid 59% (13-22) from the free-throw line, but the real story was the 33% (6-18) from behind the arc, trying and buying six triples, with Chelsy Singleton making half of them. Amiya Redus paved the way with 25 points and three steals on the afternoon, and Chelsy Singleton was an offensive threat as well with 14 points and two steals. Amari Butler was extremely valuable off the bench with six points on two three-pointers as well as five rebounds. Aijah Manning also provided five rebounds of her own, while also scoring seven points. Rhyan Wilson was another important name, collecting four rebounds both offensively and defensively for a total of eight, the most of any Hawks this afternoon.
