ROME- The Shorter Hawks (9-7, 7-2 CC) extended their win streak to five with a defensively dominant 56-50 victory over Young Harris Monday night.
The Hawks came out blazing in the opening frame, scoring 14 unanswered to gain the upper hand early. Shorter shut down the Mountain Lions' offense, allowing just 5 points on 1-of-10 shooting in the first quarter. The Hawks continued their strong play, as
Chelsy Singleton opened the second quarter on a layup to keep them out in front. The visitors started to hit their shots late in the quarter, closing the frame on an 8-2 run to make it a 22-17 affair as they entered halftime.
Shorter's offense took off once again, going on a 10-0 run fueled by strong guard play from Singleton and
Amiya Redus to put the Hawks ahead 32-19. The Hawks defense continued to smother the visitors, giving up just five points in the third quarter while also forcing multiple turnovers. The final quarter saw Young Harris make a last push at the Hawks' lead. Right at the 2:00 mark, the Mountain Lions made it a 46-40 game with a layup to crawl their way back into it. Despite the last minute push, the Hawks remained poised, having successful trips a the charity stripe in the final minute to hang on in a 56-50 win.
As a unit, the Hawks held Young Harris to 33.3% from the field while forcing them to shoot 4-of-28 (14.3%) from behind-the-arc. The Hawks defense forced 22 turnovers while recording 13 steals and three blocks.
Chelsy Singleton led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists with
Amiya Redus chipping in 10 points. Five Hawks recorded double-digit steals to solidify their presence on the defensive end.

The Hawks will look to keep their win streak alive as they travel to Southern Wesleyan this Wednesday for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
