Hawks Fly Past Catawba in 62-54 Victory

SALISBURY, N.C.- Backed by a 26-point outing from Amiya Redus, the Shorter Women's Basketball team earned a 62-54 victory over Catawba Wednesday night inside of Goodman Arena. The win puts the Hawks back to .500, improving their record to 3-3 overall.

The hosts began the game on a 7-2 run to take the early advantage. Amiya Redus responded with back-to-back triples to give the Hawks the lead. Both sides battled for the remainder of the quarter, with the Hawks leading 14-12 after one. The second quarter showcased several lead changes as both teams traded buckets. After the Hawks took the 27-21 lead, the Indians went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead. The Hawks battled back, taking the 32-31 lead at the break as Redus beat the buzzer on a last-second jumper.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle for both sides, with the Hawks managing to control the narrative by holding the Indians to just nine points in the quarter. Shorter's offense was backed by strong free-throw shooting to grant them the 45-40 lead as they headed into the fourth. Shorter's strong play continued in the fourth as Amya Patterson connected on a three to give Shorter the 50-42 lead, their largest lead of the night. The Indians would get to within one late, but baskets from Aijah Manning and Ahtiana Benway helped put the game away as the Hawks took home the 62-54 win.

The Hawks shot 40.4% (19-47) from the field as well as a solid 72% (18-25) from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Hawks shut down the Indians, holding them to 29.6% from the field and 19.2% from three. Amiya Redus led all scorers with 26 points as Chelsy Singleton followed with nine points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

"We rallied together and fought hard on the road tonight", said Head Coach LaSheena Brooks. "Our team is starting to click more as a unit and understand their roles. Offensively, we had a better night, and defensively, we were sound. Redus continues to show dominance scoring the ball, and we had a collective effort rebounding the ball".
