Hawks Fall to Bobcats in Overtime Thriller

ROME- Shorter fought hard in today's contest against Georgia College, but fell in a heartbreaking 57-55 overtime loss inside the Winthrop-King Centre Saturday afternoon.

Right from the opening tip, both teams battled with multiple lead changes occurring in the first half. Aijah Manning showcased her dominance on defense, recording six steals in the first half. The Hawks entered the half in front 28-24, with both teams emphasizing strong defensive play. 

Both teams continued to trade blows as the third quarter moved forward. After the Bobcats converted on a tip-in to even it at 34 all, the Hawks responded by going on a 10-2 run that was capped off by an Amya Patterson three just before the buzzer to give Shorter a 44-36 lead heading into the fourth. The visitors scored six unanswered to begin the fourth and bring them back into the contest. Manning helped the Hawks hold on to their lead as she converted on a layup and a pair of free throws. GCSU stormed back to take a one-point lead with less than two minutes remaining. The final minute of action saw both teams play strong-willed defense, with neither team managing to convert. With just a second remaining, Jaliyah Zackery drew a foul to give the Hawks a chance to take the lead. Zackery split her trip at the line to send the Hawks to overtime. 

The Bobcats took a 54-49 lead to begin overtime, but would be met by six straight points from the Hawks to give them a 55-54 lead with 48 seconds remaining. The visitors answered with a layup to take the lead. The Hawks had one last chance, but they could not convert, falling in a tough 57-55 defeat. 

Amya Patterson led the Hawks with 16 points and five rebounds, with Aijah Manning adding 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and six steals.

Shorter will return to action on New Year's Eve as they host Edward Waters at 2:00 PM.
