MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Shorter Men's Basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to AUM at the AUM Athletics Complex Tuesday night in an 86-84 final. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-4 overall.
The Hawks dominated the opening minutes, taking a 12-5 lead after
Donovan Shangase scored on back-to-back possessions. Shorter's offense continued to soar, going on another massive run to take a 33-14 lead at the 8:17 mark. The hosts eventually found the bottom of the net, responding on a 15-1 run to bring them to within five. Shorter managed to hold on to the lead, entering the half in front 45-36.
Shorter started out the second half on another hot streak, taking a 54-41 lead after a tip-in from
Chris Bibbs. The hosts managed to climb their way back into the contest, going on a 17-4 run to take the 66-62 lead. The final minutes proved to be a back-and-forth affair between both sides, as several lead changes occurred.
Ja'Myas Davis knocked in a clutch three with a minute left to give the Hawks the 84-81 lead. The WarHawks converted on a layup to cut the deficit to one on the very next possession. After an empty possession from Shorter, the hosts connected on a three with just 12 seconds remaining to regain the lead. The Hawks had one more chance, but came up short on a missed jumper as Shorter dropped the contest in a heartbreaking 86-84 loss.
The Hawks shot well as a team, shooting 50.9% (29-57) from the field, a solid 50% (10-20) from behind the arc, and a respectable 76.2% (16-21) from the charity stripe.
Donovan Shangase led all scorers with 21 points, pulling down four rebounds, and dishing out seven assists.
Chris Bibbs followed with 20 points and six rebounds as
Ja'Myas Davis chipped in 16 points and five rebounds.
Jalien Bush rounded out the Hawks' scoring efforts, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds.
