FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- The Shorter Women's Basketball team trailed just once as they defeated Emmanuel Tuesday night in a wire-to-wire 56-46 win inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
The Hawks were in control early, leading 18-6, fueled by 12 points from
Amiya Redus. The hosts responded with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to two once the second quarter began. The Hawks' offense continued to soar, scoring 14 unanswered to break open the lead. Shorter smothered the Lions defensively for the remainder of the quarter, holding them to 25.9% shooting from the field as well as forcing 11 turnovers. The Hawks entered the half in front 32-20.
The Hawks picked up right where they left off in the second half, scoring at will and playing a physical brand of defense. The Hawks continued to amp up the pressure, as a layup from Redus early in the fourth gave Shorter the 53-29 lead, their largest of the night. The Lions managed to cut the deficit to single digits late as their shots began to fall. The Hawks remained composed and cruised to a 56-46 win.
"Tonight was our first game in two weeks", said Head Coach
LaSheena Brooks. "Our emphasis has been defense. I challenged them to buy in and play as a team on the defensive end and that's what they did. We held Emmanuel to 13% from three, allowing under 10 points in two quarters, and forced a season-high 23 turnovers. I am proud of this team win tonight"
The Hawks shot an efficient 43.6% from the field, as well as 45.5% from three. Defensively, the Hawks recorded 16 steals and forced 23 turnovers.
Amiya Redus was an all-around threat for Shorter, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a career high six steals.
Amari Butler scored a season-high 13 points as
Amya Patterson added 10 points, five rebounds, and five steals.
