Hawks Drop Nail-Biter to Barton on the Road

WILSON, N.C.- The Hawks' hot shooting was not enough today, as they fell to Barton in a 93-87 defeat inside Wilson Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The first half was tight to begin, with no side leading by more than five. After falling behind 38-34, Shorter went on a dominant 11-0 run to take a seven-point lead. The Hawks maintained their lead for the rest of the period, as they entered the half in front 50-47.

After another close start between both sides, Axel Holmquist helped the Hawks take a 71-60 lead as he converted on back-to-back layups to give Shorter some momentum. The hosts continued to battle back, but would be met almost instantly with a three from Chris Bibbs to keep Shorter in front by ten. The Bulldogs continued to cut into the Hawk lead, eventually taking an 85-84 lead with less than 90 seconds remaining. Donovan Shangase immediately gave the Hawks the lead back with a floater to make it a one-point game. Immediately after, the hosts converted on a three to take an 88-86 lead. Shorter was provided one more opportunity, but narrowly missed on a go-ahead three in the final seconds. Barton made the most of their opportunities from the line, converting late to ice the game, as the Hawks fell in a tough 93-86 defeat.

Shorter shot 31-54 (57.6%) from the field, including a respectable 9-16 (56.3%) from behind the arc. The Hawks had five in double-figures, with Shangase leading the way, finishing with 25 points and eight assists. Chris Bibbs and Axel Holmquist poured in 18 points while Ja'Myas Davis scored 12. Michael Johnson had a great outing off the bench, securing a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
