Hawks Cruise to First Conference Victory of the Season Over Southern Wesleyan

ROME, Ga.- The Shorter Men's Basketball team took down Southern Wesleyan inside of the Winthrop-King Centre Wednesday night in a 90-84 victory, moving the Hawks to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Both teams battled at the start of the first half, with Ja'Myas Davis leading the way for Shorter, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field with 15 points. After the visitors took a 29-28 lead, Shorter went on a 14-2 run to take a 42-31 lead. The Hawks controlled the remainder of the half, with Jalien Bush sending the Hawks into the half with a 45-36 lead on a buzzer-beater three. The Hawks closed the first half shooting a scorching 61.3% from the field.

Shorter continued to control the pace of the contest as Chris Bibbs converted an and-one to put Shorter ahead 58-42. The visitors slowly started to crawl their way back into the contest, cutting the lead to five at one point. Michael Johnson provided valuable minutes off the bench for Shorter, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half to put the game out of arm's reach for Southern Wesleyan as the Hawks earned their first conference victory of the season in a 90-84 victory.

The Hawks stuffed the stat sheet, with four in double figures. Ja'Myas Davis led with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists on an impressive 8-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc. Jalien Bush finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, as Chris Bibbs posted a near triple-double with 14 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.

"Really proud of these guys to win the first two games at home", said Head Coach Wade Anderson. "We had a lot of guys step up. We have been dealing with a little bit of sickness but we were able to battle through and finish out a really close game against a really good team".

On four Hawks getting into double-figures as well as the hard work from his guys, "It is just the constant effort. JD has been putting in the time, and he showed how he can play last year. He has just been searching for his rhythm. He played the five for us last year, and now he is playing the four, searching for his rhythm in that spot. Michael has been hurt, and he finally gets an opportunity to come in and make some big stops. Chris is just constant for us, with him just being able to do so many different things. It is a good team win tonight when you are able to get a bunch of guys in double figures, and it is exciting to see because we have a bunch of other guys that are ready to step up".
