FLORENCE, S.C.- The Shorter Women's Basketball team fell to Francis Marion inside the Smith University Center Saturday afternoon in a 74-67 loss to open conference play. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-2 on the season.
The opening quarter proved to be a tight one, as both sides traded baskets. Defensively, the hosts pressured the Hawks, forcing several turnovers. After FMU jumped to a 12-8 lead,
Ahtiana Benway drilled a three to cut it to one at the end of the quarter. After another close start, Shorter jumped out in front 29-22 thanks to a
Chelsy Singleton steal and score to give the Hawks momentum. The hosts rallied back, but the Hawks held on to the lead as they entered the half in front 31-28.
The second half was a nail-biter from start to finish. After struggling from the field in the first half,
Amiya Redus found her rhythm, scoring nine points in the third quarter. The Hawks and Patriots continued to fight with FMU converting on a last-second and-one to enter the fourth in front 48-46. As the fourth quarter rolled around, both teams traded baskets with no side pulling away.
Amya Patterson gave Shorter the lead at the 2:12 mark after she connected on a three-pointer to put the Hawks ahead 67-66. In the final minute of action, the Patriots took a 70-67 lead after converting on back-to-back jumpers. The Hawks created opportunities on the offensive side, but struggled to convert as the hosts closed out the contest on an 8-0 run to make it a 74-67 final.
The Hawks shot 45.8% from the field and a respectable 42.9% from behind the arc.
Ahtiana Benway led the Hawks with a career-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting and an impressive 4-of-8 from three.
Amiya Redus followed with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while
Aijah Manning nearly recorded her third straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Shorter will look to bounce back as they host Southern Wesleyan this Tuesday at 5:30 PM for their home opener.
