Hawks Fall to #22 UNC Pembroke on the Road

Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C.- The Shorter football team fell on the road to #22 UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon in a tough 52-21 defeat.

The Hawks fought hard in the opening quarter, putting together a solid drive early. Unfortunately, the Braves tacked on three scores as the Hawks struggled to slow down their offense to make it a 21-0 affair at the end of the quarter.

Defensively, the Hawks did a better job of containing Pembroke's offense early. The Braves converted on a field goal towards the end of the quarter and would add in another score after the Hawks fumbled. Shorter's offense continued to struggle as Pembroke's defense slowed down the Hawks' run game. Shorter continued to battle, but found themselves behind 31-0 at halftime.

After the Braves returned an interception for a touchdown, the Hawks got on the board in the third quarter as Carlos Mann scored his first touchdown of the season on a 37-yard run to the right to give Shorter some momentum. The Braves would tack on another score late in the third to increase their lead as Shorter entered the fourth behind 45-7.

The Hawks continued to fight and showed true resilience as the fourth began, with Lanear McCrary Jr scoring two touchdowns in the final quarter to add to an impressive day on the ground. The Braves added in another score shortly after to add to their lead. The Hawks would fall to the 22nd ranked Braves in a 52-21 final. The Shorter tailbacks helped the Hawks have a great showing on the ground as they helped Shorter total 342 yards of rushing. Lanear McCrary Jr. had a career day for the Hawks totaling 33 carries for a career-high 187 yards and two touchdowns.
