"Adversity introduces a man to himself." — Albert Einstein
The Shorter Hawks faced a formidable challenge on Saturday, going toe-to-toe with the No. 3 ranked Valdosta State Blazers. While the scoreboard at Barron Stadium read 59-6 at the final whistle, the game was a showcase of grit, resilience, and moments of promise that point to a bright future for the Hawks as they prepare to travel to Chowan University next weekend. Coach Morrison stated, "This game will be a wake-up call for the team because they know and I know that we can play better than how we did today. The coaches put together a great game plan, but it came down to the execution of our assignment."
Standout Performances in the Passing Game
Quarterback Harold Cook displayed poise and precision in the face of relentless pressure, completing 12 of 20 passes for 163 yards. His resilience shone through with a remarkable 55-yard connection to Cobie Bates, who showcased his big-play potential. Bates finished with 59 receiving yards on just two receptions, a testament to his ability to stretch the field and create opportunities downfield.
Jaylin Marshall also contributed significantly with four receptions for 54 yards, including a 29-yard grab that moved the Hawks deep into Blazers' territory. Marshall's agility and route-running prowess were on full display, giving Cook reliable options and showing that the Hawks' passing game is one to watch as the season progresses
Tyler Simpson: Consistent and Clutch
Kicker Tyler Simpson provided a steadying presence, converting both field goal attempts from 31 and 37 yards out. His precision kept the Hawks within striking distance early on and underscored his importance as a dependable scorer. Simpson's performance extended beyond field goals, as his kickoffs averaged an impressive 66 yards, including one touchback.
Defense: Showing Fight and Resilience
Despite the relentless Valdosta offense, the Hawks' defense had moments of tenacity and determination. Maddox Jackson and Devonn Lane led the unit with five tackles each, frequently stepping up to limit Valdosta's running game. Trey Thomas also recorded five tackles and displayed his ball-hawking ability, breaking up a critical pass that kept the Blazers from extending their lead in the first quarter.
On the defensive front, Nakobi Spurrier and Jahseim Henry continued to show why they're cornerstones of the Hawks' line. Spurrier added three tackles and half a tackle for loss, while Henry consistently pressured the Blazers' backfield, helping to contain their potent rushing attack.
Special Teams and Field Position
Special teams were another bright spot for the Hawks. Punter Wyatt Walters averaged 37.8 yards per punt, with a long of 46 yards that pinned Valdosta State back and shifted field position. TJ Holmes stood out on kickoff returns, amassing 119 return yards and averaging 19.8 yards per return, providing the offense with solid starting field positions.
Looking Ahead to Chowan University
As the Hawks prepare for their next game on the road, they will carry forward the lessons learned and the positives built from this game. Facing one of the best teams in the country has only fueled their resolve to improve and compete. With a strong foundation, talented players, and a spirit of resilience, the Hawks are poised to take the field against Chowan with renewed determination.
Though the journey ahead will have its challenges, the Shorter Hawks have proven they are capable of growth and poised to respond. The season is young, and with each game, the Hawks continue to lay the foundation for a program built on perseverance and faith. #BrickByBrick
