ROME, Ga. — "Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength." — Arnold Schwarzenegger
In a game that was fought until the very last second, the Shorter Hawks left everything on the field against Chowan University, falling 31-27 in a dramatic contest that saw the Hawks take the lead three times. The Hawks were on the 5-yard line ready to take the win as the seconds ticked down, but time expired as Chowan players were laying on top of a Shorter University receiver not allowing him to get up in time. While the outcome was not what they had hoped for, Shorter's student-athletes showcased their resilience and determination, offering a glimpse of their true potential as they prepare for their next battle on the road against West Georgia. "I hate it for the team, because I feel like we should have had time for one last play, but the GSC Officials called the game before we could get the snap off. At the end of the day, we shouldn't have put ourselves in that situation in the first place. This is such a game of details, and we need to do a better job finishing off an opponent while we are up in the game. We will continue to lead with faith, effort, toughness and attitude as we prepare for FCS West Georgia," stated Coach
Zach Morrison.
Charles Alia: A Workhorse in the Red Zone
Running back
Charles Alia was a force throughout the game, pounding his way to three touchdowns on 21 carries. He racked up 71 rushing yards and consistently found ways to keep drives alive, capping off three long drives with scores that showcased his vision and power. His final touchdown, a two-yard plunge in the third quarter, put Shorter ahead 27-17, highlighting his impact as a dependable red-zone threat.
Joshua Brown and the Aerial Attack
Quarterback Joshua Brown put on a gritty performance, completing 17 of 26 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Brown's 36-yard touchdown pass to
Cadrece Mobley in the third quarter was a highlight reel moment, showing his deep-ball accuracy and connection with his receivers. Brown spread the ball effectively among his targets, with
Cobie Bates leading the way with five catches and
Jaylin Marshall contributing three receptions for 46 yards. This balanced attack through the air kept the Hawks in the game and demonstrated the growth of Shorter's passing game.
Defensive Tenacity
On defense, the Hawks were anchored by
Kobe Butts, who led the team with 11 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. Butts was relentless, showcasing his ability to disrupt Chowan's backfield and keep the pressure on.
Trey Thomas added 2 tackles for loss and forced a fumble that gave Shorter a crucial possession in the third quarter. The defensive line, led by
Nakobi Spurrier and
Jahseim Henry, made it tough for Chowan to establish a consistent rushing attack.
Special Teams Bright Spots
Tyler Simpson was flawless on kickoffs, delivering five touchbacks that pinned Chowan deep in their own territory.
Wyatt Walters, with a long punt of 56 yards, played a vital role in shifting field position. Special teams also blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter, as
Nakobi Spurrier broke through Chowan's line to keep the Hawks' hopes alive.
Looking Forward to West Georgia

This game was a testament to their toughness, and the experience gained will be invaluable as they continue to build their program brick by brick. The road may be challenging, but this team has shown they have the heart to rise above any adversity. With leaders like
