FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — The Shorter Hawks traveled northeast to Franklin Springs, GA this past weekend to compete in the Lion's Den Invitational. Winning 2 out of their 4 matches, the Hawks showed big signs of improvement to bring their overall record to 3-3 on the year.
In game one, the Hawks went three and out against the host school, Emmanuel College. Despite the loss, one of the newest members to the Hawk squad, Laila Bernardino, showed out with 9 kills. And returner Amelia Thro led the Hawks with 12 assists.
Game two was the opposite of the previous game, as the Hawks made light work out of the Erskine Flying Fleet, taking the first three sets to an easy victory. New Mexico natives shined in game two, as Laila Bernardino had 15 kills and Marysa Ocampo had 21 assists. Returner Claudia Loyola was on her "A" game, leading the team with four aces.
After an outstanding game two, the Hawks were knocked down the next day as they went three and out again to the Francis Marion Patriots. Returner Emily Crocker led the tough battle with 11 kills and a couple blocks to her name. Amelia Thro and Marysa Ocampo both led with a notable number of assists.
The Hawks finished strong as they bounced back and swept the Southern Wesleyan Warriors, winning three sets to none. Emily Crocker led the way again with 9 kills, while senior, Abigail Cima joined in on the action with 7 kills. Marysa Ocampo continued her strong weekend with 14 assists and Freshman Brielle Wood contributing big time with 14 assists and three aces.
All in all, the Shorter Hawks did well over the weekend sporting a .500 record. They will take on Augusta University this Tuesday and open up GSC play with the rival UAH Chargers at home on Friday. Fly Hawks!
