ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks swept the University of West Alabama Tigers in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex to continue Gulf South Conference (GSC) play. The Hawks defeated the Tigers 8-3 in game one and 7-1 in the nightcap.
Shorter improves to 12-6 on the season and 6-2 in GSC play after the doubleheader. West Alabama is now 4-14 on the season and 2-3 in GSC play.
Game 1, Shorter wins 8-3
The Hawks defeated the Tigers 8-3 in game one of today's doubleheader.
Shorter hit back-to-back home runs to score the first two runs game one in the home half of the first. Lyndon Weaver hit a two-run home run and then Cameron Tilly hit a solo home run.
The Hawks plated three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Justin Barnes singled to right, and this scored Cory Mason and Tilly. Shortly after this, Kody Krause singled, and this scored Barnes.
West Alabama did not plate its first run of game one until the top of the seventh.
Andres Ferreiro singled through the left side to score Barnes and Mason to plate the final two runs of the game for the Hawks.
The Tigers plated their final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth.
Barnes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Tilly went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mason went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Tyler McWillie (W, 2-0) got the start for the Hawks in game one today. He tossed five innings, striking out three and giving up seven hits and two walks. Ethan Hawthorne and James Colyer both pitched in relief and both had one strikeout.
Game 2, Shorter wins 7-1
The Hawks defeated West Alabama 7-1 in the nightcap of this afternoon's doubleheader.
Jonathan Pintaro (W, 4-1) started for the Hawks in game two and pitched the entire game. He was dominant over seven innings of work, striking out seven and giving up one run on four hits and four walks.
Shorter plated the first run of game two in the bottom of the first. Cameron Tilly walked, and Lyndon Weaver then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the West Alabama catcher.
Kody Krause and Justin Barnes both scored in the bottom of the second after Isaac Harkins grounded into a double play. This made the score 3-0 Shorter.
The score remained 3-0 until the home half of the fourth when the Hawks plated two additional runs. Tilly singled to second to score Harkins for the inning's first run. Shortly after this, Tyler McWillie singled to left center, and this scored Tilly.
Shorter plated its sixth run of the game in the fifth after Andres Ferreiro scored on an error by the West Alabama catcher.
The Tigers plated their first run of game two in the top of the sixth.
The Hawks scored the final run of game two in bottom of the sixth. Krause doubled down the right field line to score Tilly.
Mason went 3-for-3. Krause went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Tilly went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.
