Hawks Drop Doubleheader and Series to Argonauts

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Shorter Hawks fell in both games of a doubleheader against the University of West Florida Argonauts on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks fell 13-4 in game one and were defeated 4-2 in the nightcap. Since Shorter won last night's game and West Florida swept the doubleheader this afternoon, the Argonauts won the series 2-1.

Shorter is now 10-5 on the season and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference (GSC) play. West Florida improves to 7-5 on the season and 5-1 in GSC play.

Game 1, Shorter falls 13-4

The Hawks fell 13-4 in game one of today's doubleheader.  

Cory Mason hit a two-run home run to right field to plate the first two runs of the game for Shorter.  

West Florida took the lead from the Hawks in the bottom of the third after plating three runs. They maintained this lead until top of the fifth when Joshua Hayes hit a home run to center to tie the game.

The game did not stay tied for long as the Argonauts plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.

In the top of the sixth, Justin Barnes singled to right field, and this scored Cameron Tilly to plate the final run of the game for the Hawks.

The Argonauts plated their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Mason went 1-for-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Hayes went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Jacob Pajer and Tilly both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Carson Cook (L, 1-2) started for the Hawks in game one. He tossed 4.1 innings, striking out one and giving up one earned run on five hits.

Game 2, Shorter falls 4-2

The Hawks dropped game two of today's doubleheader 4-2.

The Argonauts plated the first two runs of the game in the home half of the second.

Cory Mason hit a home run to center field to plate the first run of the game for Shorter in the top of the fourth.

West Florida plated its third run of the game after an RBI single in the fifth.

Mason singled up the middle to score Lyndon Weaver for the final run of game two for the Hawks in the top of the sixth.

The Argonauts plated the final run of the game in the home half of the sixth after another RBI single.

Mason went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Weaver went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jonathan Pintaro (L, 3-1) got the start for the Hawks in game two and tossed five innings, striking out seven and giving up three runs on four hits.

Up Next

The Hawks return home on Tuesday for a non-conference game with the Georgia College Bobcats. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
