Hawks Defeat Argonauts in Extra Innings Behind Dominant Pitching

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Shorter Hawks defeated the University of West Florida Argonauts 4-1 in 11 innings in a key Gulf South Conference (GSC) game on Friday evening.

The Hawks improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-0 in GSC play. The Argonauts are now 5-5 on the season and 3-1 in GSC play.

Shorter's pitching staff was dominant in tonight's game and did not surrender a run until the seventh inning. Tyler McWillie started for the Hawks and tossed five innings, striking out seven and giving up two hits and one walk. Ethan Hawthorne (W, 1-0) tossed 3.2 innings in relief, striking out six and giving up two hits and two walks. James Colyer (S, 1) closed the game for the Hawks and had two strikeouts.

The West Florida pitching staff was also dominant and did not surrender a run until the seventh inning. Josh Pahlad started for the Argonauts and tossed seven innings, striking out nine and giving up one run on four hits and one walk.

Lyndon Weaver hit a solo home run to center to plate the first run of the game for the Hawks in the top of the seventh. The Argonauts answered back quickly and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.

The game went into extra innings as the score remained 1-1 until the Hawks plated two additional runs in the top of the 11th. Cory Mason singled to center to score Jacob Pajer for the first run of the inning. Right after this, Weaver hit a two-run home run to plate the final two runs of the game.

Weaver went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Pajer went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Mason went 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.

Up Next

The Hawks return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Argonauts and look to take the series. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. in Pensacola.
